Billionaire businesswoman and one of the world’s richest black women, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, has explained the rationale behind the donation of a 250-bed Teaching Hospital to the Osun State University by herself and her husband, Mr Modupe Alakija, as one borne out of her love for children, mothers, humanity in general and for the advancement of medical education.

Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola (2nd right) laying the foundation of the 250-bed teaching hospital at the Osun State University flanked by the Chairman, Famfa Oil Ltd, Mr Modupe Alakija and wife Folorunsho, Chancellor of Osun State University, and  the newly inaugurated Governor, Gboyega Oyetola and others at the ceremony recently in Osun.

Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony of the 250-bed Teaching Hospital during the university’s 7th Convocation ceremony in Osun, she added that the donation was also in fulfilment of a pledge when she was appointed Chancellor of the institution by the former governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

Mrs Alakija who seized the opportunity to advice the nation’s leaders to ensure that all Nigerians, including children and adults, always have access to timely and qualitative medical services, asserted that  only a healthy nation can be productive and prosperous.

She said: “The Osun State University Teaching Hospital will provide an avenue for medical excellence, job creation and bring relief to humanity.

“The hospital, when completed, will consist of a world class community health unit, maternity & neonatal medicare, research and diagnostic laboratories, state-of-the-art operating theatres, C.T Scan facilities, X-ray and radiotherapy suites among a host of others.”

In her admonition to the graduands, she said: “If you are to be relevant in your generation, you must be ready to acquire more skills and potentials and be prepared to develop such skills. You must figure out your purpose and passion because your passion will lead you right into your purpose. Others can inspire you, but ultimately, the only thing that empowers you is what lies within you and learning how to better utilise what you have been given.’’

While declaring that the university’s 7th convocation was symbolic, Alakija said seven represented perfection.

“Seven is a representation of perfection. I pray that God will perfect everything that concerns the lives of our new graduands in Jesus’ name. I urge you to be good ambassadors of Osun state University and not tarnish the reputation of the institution.  I also rejoice with your parents and guardians; their sacrifices over you shall not be in vain in Jesus’ name.’’
