RICE farmers in Nigeria under the aegis of Rice Farmers Association (RIFAN) have appealed to the Federal Government and Edo State government to come to their aid following the destruction of thousands of hectares of rice farmlands by flood in several communities in Edo North and Edo Central senatorial districts.
Ñational Vice President of the association, Mr.DirisuAbdulsalam, who made appeal in Benin yesterday said the flooding would have negative effect on the rice-sufficiency drive of governments.
He disclosed that the association was putting modality in place to ensure that the farmers were ready for dry season farming.
He said: “The association will be sensitising rice farmers for dry season farming to make up for the shortfall.
“There are problems in rice production and the worst of it at the moment is that flood has washed away crops and even submerged some of our members and other villagers’ houses.
“Therefore, we appeal for assistance from any tier of government such as federal, state and local government and of course the World Bank and others so that our farmers will not commit suicide.
“The flooding will reduce rice production chain in the state, and more so, these farmers have lost millions of naira to the flood. The funds were sourced externally from banks, among others and now they are indebted to those that borrowed them the money.”.
