Former Nigeria international and one time Super Eagles assistant coach, Sylvanus Okpala has warned that if the looming leadership crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation was allowed to continue it could lead to a ban on the country by the Federation of International Football Association, FIFA.
In a chat with Sporting Vanguard at his FESTAC Town residence yesterday, the former coach of Rangers International Football Club of Enugu said a FIFA ban could further plunge the country’s football into the abyss.
He disagreed with those who said a ban would put the country in a better position to reorganise its house, saying, “that is a wrong position because the ban would be indefinite. You cannot tell FIFA how many months, years or decades a ban should last.”
He however, took solace in what the Sports Minister said recently that “it is an internal affair that could be settled internally.”
Okpala said, “the Minister is the only one who can initiate peace and achieve it in the football family. If Giwa wins it through the court there will still be no peace and if Pinnick wins through FIFA, there would still be no peace. The sports minister should use his good offices to restore peace and harmony in Nigeria football.”
