OLEH—SUSPECTED cultists reportedly killed one Mr. Oyenka Oyende at Ndemili community, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Delta State, yesterday morning, just as the police also killed a suspected armed robber in Sapele Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the 26-year-old, Oyenka Oyende, was nephew to chairman of the commu-nity’s vigilante team.

Though the circumstances surrounding the incident could not be ascertained at press time, a source said the killers of the deceased were members of a cult group in the community.

The source, who craved anonymity, said cultists have been terrorizing the community over the last few years.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, however, said Oyenka Oyende was killed by “a gang of seven” persons.

He said: “The matter was reported by one Martins Oyende, the vigilante Chairman of Ndemili community.

“He reported the matter at Ndemili Police Station that about 01:00hr on Monday, his nephew, Oyenka Oyende (26yrs), who hails from Ndimili, was attacked and shot dead by a gang of seven.

“The gang leader was only recently released from prison in an ongoing case of arson and attempted murder.

“Two of the suspects have been arrested by the police. The corpse has been deposited at Ndemili hospital morgue.”

On the killing of the robbery suspect in Sapele council, the command’s spokesman, while confirming the killing, said the Police will in due course make information available to newsmen.

But a Police source told Vanguard: “At 3.30a.m. on Monday morning, information got to us that robbers were at a house along Akpoaisi Road.

“Our men swung into action and stormed the place. The robbers on sighting the Police opened fire.”

The source, who craved anonymity, further claimed that the Police then engaged the robbers in a shoot-out. “one was shot in the leg while the others escaped with bullet wounds, the wounded one later died at Sapele Central Hospital.”
