Brethren, it’s the last Sunday in the month of April, that we are alive today is enough reason to thank God. Therefore, let’s go ahead and thank God not just today but everyday.
Just as this column went to bed last week, a Christian brother sent me a message that was just along the same line as our topic of last week. As I ended the column last week, my inner spirit told me that I didn’t conclude that topic. In other words, there is the need to continue with that topic.
As it that wasn’t enough, the same issue of our attitude came up again during a weekly programme, I attended somewhere in Lagos.
All of these led to what you are reading today. I believe God is talking to many of us about our attitude. Even as believers, regular churchgoers, many of us fall short of the expectation of our Lord Jesus Christ in the way we conduct ourselves.
I’ll begin with attitudes that one has seen even in the churches.
How do we explain that Christians including ministers keep malice with others including church members for whatever reason. Brethren, is this the way of our Lord Jesus? We have no record that Jesus broke his relationship even with those who falsely accused him and were bent on crucifying him.
Let’s look at the attitude of our Lord Jesus as recorded in Luke 22 vs. 47 – 52 “ And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord shall we smite with the sword? And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear and healed him.
What can be more painful than betrayal? See how the Lord Jesus handled it.
He didn’t push Judas away; neither did he tell his disciplines to shield him from Judas even when he knew what Judas was about to do.
Let’s look at the attitude of Jesus to the man whose right ear was chopped off. Even as he felt the pain of betrayal, he still had compassion and immediately healed the ear.
If you and I were to be in the place of Jesus, we would have acted differently.
Just last week in a popular Pentecostal church, two women threw caution to the wind and started abusing each other in the church. I mean right in the presence of the Almighty God. One had arrived early. She sat down and also used items to secure seats for her friends. Another woman, arrived removed one of the bags and insisted she would sit on that particular chair. The woman who kept the chair resisted her. Fellow worshippers intervened to no avail. The one who took the space said she knew the other woman had always wanted to confront her. These women spent more that 30 minutes of the time that they should have been praying to God abusing each other. At the end of the day, the woman for whom a seat was reserved did not show up.
The attitude of these women right in the presence of God definitely distracted them from worshipping the Lord whole-heartedly.
That’s on the negative note. Let’s take a look at examples of human attitudes that provoked miracles as recorded in the Holy Bible. Genesis 18 vs. 1-14 narrates the story of Abraham and how he entertained the three men who were passing by.
Verses 7&8 “ And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetch a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hastened to dress it”. And he took butter, and milk and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat”.
See what followed in verses 9 &10 and they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold in the tent. And he said I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door which was behind him”.
What if Abraham had ignored the visitors? What if they asked him for water and he denied them?
Let’s see the attitude of Sarah in verse 6 “ And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth”.
Did you see an obedient wife? At her age, she could have told her husband not to disturb her with the entertainment of unknown visitors.
Did you get the point that in spite of the challenge of delay in child bearing, the couple, Abraham and Sarah were accommodating and generous? How are you coping with yours? Do you wish those who have what you don’t have evil just because you don’t have? Be careful, so that your attitude will not cost you your miracle.
In the name of Jesus, as Sarah heard the good news that she will be a mother, you too will receive good news from the Lord in Jesus name.
Know for sure that God can send anyone to you. You must however be cautious. Is the message of that person in line with the word of God? If not, jettison it. If so, watch and pray about it.
I’ll share with you the message from a Christian brother( identity withheld). He wrote, “ Sometimes, we are our own demons. Our attitudes are our destiny killers. Some of us have insulted people that were divinely orchestrated to help us. Some of you are keeping malice with your destiny helper. Some of you are still suffering, not because you lack talent but because you lack character”.
In his opinion, “ Character is virtue, and sometimes what we call FAVOUR is triggered by virtue”.
He suggested, “ Treat strangers with courtesy. Be kind. Your angel won’t always come like an Angel. Look down on nobody”.
Brethren, God can use anybody to change your life.
I remember when a lady was going to Israel on a course, which included an opportunity for the Christian pilgrimage. Just after receiving her visa in Abuja, she visited a family friend in his office. He was the head of a government agency. They got talking and she told him, she was going to Israel. At this time, she had barely two hundred Dollars for the trip. Of course, she didn’t tell the man that but it was as if God programmed him to make the lady’s trip comfortable. The man opened his drawer and gave her $1,000. The man who is not a Christian, jokingly told her, take and wash your sins away in Israel.
During the weekly programme, the preacher said, some women are losing their homes because of lack of character.
We need to educate our daughters on how to relate with in laws and people generally. It is the duty of the young wife to be friendly to all including the ones that obviously dislike her.
By so doing, she will be laying the foundation for a joyful home.
At some point, even if they gang up to work against your marriage, God will arise and fight for you.
Brethren, we need to find time to do some sober reflection on our lifestyle.
What is it that you are doing that could be an obstacle to your miracle?
We all can search our conscience, repent or restitute.
God who looks at the heart will surely remove every challenge.
May the Lord help us to live in accordance with his word.
Have a blessed week.
