FG records 1,005 vandalized points in one year

Despite reduction in militancy activities across the nation, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, disclosed that a total of 1,005 pipeline points were vandalized in the last one year.

The corporation in its monthly financial operation report for November, 2017, stated that, “A total of 1005 vandalized points have been recorded between November 2016 to November 2017.”

NNPC noted that products theft and vandalism have continued to destroy value and put the corporation at disadvantaged competitive position.

According to the report, “In November 2017, a total 90 pipeline points were vandalized, 41 pipeline points failed to be welded while 6 pipeline points were either ruptured or clamped.”

“Thus, 136 pipeline points were destroyed for the month under review. PHC-ABA and ABA-ENUGU pipeline segment accounted for almost 67percent of the affected pipeline points.”

Meanwhile, HOST Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas (HOSTCOM) revealed that they currently recruiting 2,000 youths to protect pipelines and oil facilities in the South-East.

This is in line with the Federal Government mandated to HOSTCOM on recruiting 10,000 youths within the 19 HOSTCOM states in the country for the protection of oil and gas pipelines and infrastructure. The Executive Chairman of HOSTCOM in Enugu State, Dr Perry Iloegbunam, said that the major challenge the country had faced over the years was vandalization of oil and gas pipelines and infrastructure.

“This recruitment will eradicate completely the issue of pipeline vandalism and other nefarious activities carried on oil and gas facilities and infrastructure. “So, we are very hopefull that as soon as these youths are deployed; the vandalizing seen or noticed would stop.”
