Group kicks against renaming of federal road

By Dotun Ibiwoye
FEDERAL
Government has been urged to  revert to the old name of a federal road that cuts across Umueri, Anam, Nzam in Anambra State and Ibaji in Kogi state, because other communities that had such experience retained their names on the road.

Greater Umueri Liberation Forum, GULF, a group of professionals of Umueri community, Anambra State,  said that the unofficial renaming of the federal road is a total disregard to due process.

In a release signed by the Coordinator of the group, Comrade Biafra Buchi Diboh and Secretary,  Barr Philips Obuesi, the group said that the renaming was also without recourse to the host communities.

According to Diboh: “The history of the road construction can be traced to abandonment by past successive governments. The road was officially launched during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida in 1991 as Umueri-Anam-Nzam-Ibiaji federal road. We are wondering the reasons why the name Umueri was over-nightly changed to Otuocha without recourse to the community.

“The commencement of the road project that would hitherto be a thing of the joy to the community has turned their excitement into worries.”

If there is anything wrong with the town’s name, we are worried on the sudden change in the name of the road.

‘’What is really wrong with the nomenclature. Not long ago, we had similar issues during the Anambra State Cargo Airport flag off, when the state government erased the community name and replaced it with our Neighboring town.  Despite the fact that the airport is located centrally in our community.
