The above verse of the Holy Qur’an must have spurred some of the Tabi‘in (the successors of the Companions of the Prophet) over 2000 years ago to hold sessions in which poetry and songs were composed and rendered to honor the dignity and the righteous example of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w). Scholars have told us that the immediate companions of the Prophet (s.a.w) did not necessarily engage in the practice, but this, however, does not mean to say that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) forbade his any act of ibadaah to commemorate that day. Although this practice has been a bone of contention among Muslim jurists (fuqaha) and Muslim scholars since its inception, but Muslims world over and intellectuals over time have come to accept it as part of the ibadaah and culture of Islam.
