Mr Bolaji Oyeleye, Ogun state Commissioner for Environment has warned traders in the state to stop dumping refuse in drainages or face stiff penalty.
He gave the warning during an enforcement exercise at Lafenwa Market on Friday, in Abeokuta.
Oyeleye, who was represented by Mr Owolabi Oduntan, the State Environmental Sanitation Task Force (Team A) said the warning was to ensure a clean and healthy environment across the state.
He noted that Section 27 of the State Environmental Management (Miscellaneous) Provisions Law, 2004 prohibits dumping of refuse in drainages.
“Most traders and residents in some areas are fond of dumping refuse in drainages meant to avert flooding,
“I am sounding a note of warning, as anyone caught in the act would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“Our law is there for everyone to see, It is no longer news that government does not tolerate blocking and dumping of refuse in drainages built to curtail storm water.
“The new drainages have reduced the severe flooding on our roads and we will continue to enforce the prohibition across the state so as to have clean and healthy environment,’’ he said
Oyeleye called on traders in the state to always clean up their stalls, and not wait for government’s enforcement before embarking on environmental sanitation.
He also decried the persistent dumping of refuse on the roads.
The commissioner reiterated government’s commitment at promoting proper sanitation in the State.
He called on residents and all stakeholders to support the government’s agenda on clean environment.
