MI Abaga was never my personal assistant — Djinee

By Rotimi Agbana

Seasoned Nigerian musician, Producer and TV presenter, Osayamwen Nosa Donald, popularly known as ‘Djinee’, has finally broken silence on rumour which has since gone viral that Chocolate City Boss, MI Abaga, was once his personal assistant and used to run errands for him before hitting limelight.

In an exclusive chat, the Ego hit maker told  Showtime that there was never a time in his career that MI worked with him as a personal assistant or errand boy. While debunking the news, he bragged that MI would never say such, whether in an interview or in his presence.

“What? Never! There was never a time MI was my personal assistant; even MI cannot sit here and say such a thing. It’s true he and the likes of Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz and the rest came to Lagos through me, but he was never my personal assistant, neither was there a time he used to help me carry my guitar around”, he said.

On why he took a break from making music, he claimed he had been on a journey of self discovery.  “I needed to find my sound, I wasn’t exactly happy with the sound I was making at that time, with the success of songs like Over Killing, came much expectations. It’s like what oil did to our nation; sometimes it comes with its curses.

Over Killing was a different sound from Ego and other songs; I went on a different tangent entirely so people began to expect a different kind of music I wasn’t comfortable doing; so I needed to find myself and also I needed to do a bit of travelling within and outside Nigeria. I had a lot of performances to do and in those performances and journey, I met people from different races and I found out that people just needed to hear me sing. My voice is my most powerful tool; it doesn’t matter what instrumental is playing, my voice is what’s important. I’m so confident about my voice; a lot of people came with suggestions and corrections, especially people outside the country; but I just went on with self discovery”, mused.
