The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it is determined to put a stop to illegal mining in the country in spite of the myriad of challenges.
The Commander General of the corps, Abdullahi Gana, said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.
Gana said the activities of illegal miners was jeopardising the country’s economic growth in view of the fact the perpetrators of the act were making billions of naira at the expense of the country.
“It is on record that about five weeks ago we arrested 14 big time illegal miners in Plateau State.
“Unfortunately, out of the number, 13 of them are foreigners from China and honestly they make billions of out of this thing.
“We are determined to stop it. We have arrested about three or four sets now; and we are taking them to court.
“In Lagos we closed down about nine illegal mines; in Minna we have closed so many.
“We are not saying people should engage in mining activity.
“We are saying that if you have to mine, show us your licence. Even if you are a foreigner, we do not mind.
“Once you have a licence from the Federal Government saying that you are permitted to mine, it is okay with us.’’
Recall that the Minister of Mines and steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, said at a recent meeting attended by all cadre of workers in the ministry that the huge scale of illegal mining in the country was synonymous to economic terrorism.
He said that government was determined to confront anyone or group positioning themselves to sabotage the Nigerian economy through illegal mining and other means.
More than 1000 illegal mining sites are said to be existing in Nigeria through activities that promote illicit financial outflows, thereby denying the country of highly needed income from its rich natural resources.
