Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, a member, Board of Trustee (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for the development of golf in Nigeria to encourage female participation in the game.
Nwodo, a former Governor of Enugu State stated this in Abuja at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between the Ladies Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (LPGAN) and OJAYS Travels and Tours, an indigenous company.
According to Nwodo, the development of the game in the country will enable golfers, especially the ladies attain international fame and also cater for their families.
“This ladies professional golfers association of Nigeria aims to achieve a lot of things.
“It is the first time an association like this is being set up in Nigeria and I think it is something that is coming very late because golf has international fame.
“As of today, it is arguably the only sport that competes with football in terms of remuneration.
“In Nigeria, most of our female graduates are unemployed and it’s easier to be known as a sports personality than a political personality.
“People know Tiger Woods, (a former world number one golfer) than they Know Donald Trump, the U.S. President. So, it is something we must domicile here to salvage our youths,” Nwodo said.
Ulomma Mbuko, Nigeria’s number one Professional Lady Golfer and the founder of the association, said she decided to develop lady golfers in the country to put Nigeria on the world map of golf.
Mbuko also said that the idea was to create and develop dignified job opportunities for young ladies.
“We are presently working out a scholarship for some of the lady golfers through Professional Golf Association (PGA), South Africa.
“Saint Andrews has the scholarship for development programmes such as ours; so, we are hoping to use the platform of PGA South Africa to get that sponsorship.
“The idea is that the PGA South Africa will get the money and train our people and also equip them through Saint Andrews which is an established association,” Mbuko said.
Hans Omang, Managing Partner, OJAYS Travels and Tours, said they were not into the partnership for profit making but to promote the lady golfers and female golfing in Nigeria.
Omang promised to leave no stone unturned to take ladies professional golf to the next level.
