Niger Tornadoes FC of Minna on Sunday said that it was happy to maintain the 11th position in the just concluded 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) despite its promise to finish among top ten.
Mr George Daniya, its Media Officer, who made this known during an interview recalled that the club ended the 2015/2016 NPFL campaign on the same position.
Tornadoes defeated Shooting Stars (3SC) of Ibadan 2-0 in Lokoja, sending the 3SC to relegation.
“We are happy to have maintained our NPFL status, finishing on same 11th position as we did in 2015/2016 season.
“This year’s NPFL has been very competitive even though we couldn’t finish in top 10 as we gave ourselves target, we are proud of the team.
“Having survived the second season we believe we have learnt enough. What we will focus on now is the pursuit of laurels and titles next season,’’ he said.
Daniya said that with the end of the 2016/2017 NPFL the club was working toward success in the ongoing AITEO Cup (Federations Cup) which it has qualified to play in the last 16 rounds.
He said that in the concluded NPFL Tornadoes garnered 54 points from 38 matches, scored 31 goals, conceded 35, won 15 matches, drew four and lost 18.
Plateau United, MFM and Enyimba will represent Nigeria in the continental club championships and would be joined by the Cup winner of AITEO Cup.
The relegated teams in this year’s NPFL are 3SC, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Gombe United, and Remo Stars.
