The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWGN), an NGO, has called on the Federal Government to declare the first day of the Islamic year, as work-free-day.
The call is contained in a statement issued in Ilorin on Thursday by the National Coordinator of the group, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, to mark the new Islamic Year, 1439.
The coordinator contended that declaring the day as work-free-day would give Nigerian Muslim’s a sense of belonging.
Abdullahi said the day should be used to share love, preach peaceful coexistence, and caution Nigerians against provocative statements capable of breaching the peace.
He stressed the need for mutual tolerance and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians irrespective of religious affiliations.
The group commended some states of federation that declared the first day of Muharram as work-free-day to mark the new Islamic year.
