File: Man drowns in a well in Enugu

THERE is tension in Nkpokiti Street of Enugu State capital, following the death of a caretaker, said to have drowned in a well at an uncompleted building under his care.

Vanguard gathered that the deceased, identified as Oruka Justus, of Uli Street Ogui, Enugu, was found dead in a well last Thursday at Pocket Layout, Nkpokiti, Enugu, where he worked as a house keeper of the building that is under construction.
Sympathisers, who trooped to the scene of the incident, were said to have been dumbfounded as the body was recovered from the well and rushed to Eastern Medical Centre, where he was confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, Enugu State Police Command, yesterday, launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his drowning.
A statement by the Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, in Enugu, said the incident occurred at 10a.m. on September 21.
Amaraizu said the Homicide and Criminal Investigation Departments were doing everything they can to unravel the cause of the incident.
He noted that the victim, who lived at Uli Street, Ogui in Enugu, drowned in a well inside an uncompleted building located at Pocket Layout in Nkpokiti, in the state capital.
His words: “People gathered in their large numbers in Nkpokiti axis of Enugu, expressing shock and sorrow as they received information about a man that allege-dly drowned in a well.
“It was gathered that the deceased, identified as Justus Oruka, allegedly drowned in a well inside an uncompleted building at Pocket Layout, Nkpokiti where the deceased is said to be working as a caretaker.
“It was further gathered that when he was eventually recovered from the well and rushed to Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.”
