ABUJA—The National Judicial Institute, NJI, yesterday said there was need for measures to be put in place to cushion the effect of economic recession on the Judiciary.
Administrator of the Institute, Justice R. P. I. Bozimo, said there was need for those she identified as “financial gatekeepers” in the Judiciary to generate pragmatic solutions towards achieving better management of resources allocated to the Justice sector.
Justice Bozimo made the call while flagging-off a National Workshop for Directors of Finance, Internal Auditors and Other Financial Officers in the Judiciary, at the NJI headquarters in Abuja.
According to her: “The theme of the workshop ‘Prudent Management of Judicial Resources in the Face of Economic Recession’ is indeed most appropriate, in view of the current economic crisis in Nigeria.
“Measures must be put in place to cushion the effect of the economic recession in the Judiciary as well.”
“All hands must be put in deck to ensure that financial managers and officers entrusted with the management of public funds are trained in the new and best practices of management o resources so as to perform their duties optimally.
“My lords, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, this category of participants are considered the ‘financial gatekeepers’ whose presence within the Judiciary underlines a commitment to sound financial principles, stability and progress.”
“Therefore, there is need for all accounting personnel to uphold the ethics of the accounting profession.
“Permit me to use this opportunity to remind the participants of the importance of their roles to the overall success of the Judiciary.
“Your actions or inactions can affect the smooth running of the court’s and the judicial system as a whole.
“I therefore urge you to imbibe integrity, probity, transparency and shun all forms of corruption in the discharge of your duties.
“I believe that this workshop will generate pragmatic solutions towards achieving better management of the resources available to the Judiciary during this time of economic recession”, Justice Bozimo added.
Participants at the workshop were selected from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
