As UIMGA holds discourse on recession

A LECTURER at the Department of Economics, University of Ibadan, Dr. Aminu Alarudeen, has stated that corruption and other related issues were yet to be decisively dealt with in the country, stating that only a little above N150billion had been recovered by the current administration out of over a trillion naira reported to have been stolen from the government’s coffers.

Alarudeen stated this at the post-Ramadan Symposium organised by the University of Ibadan Muslim Graduates’ Association, UIMGA, themed: ‘Corruption And Recession: The Nigerian Experience’ held in Ibadan recently.

Presenting a paper at the event,  Dr. Alarudeen lauded the whistle blowing policy of the Federal government among other various steps introduced by different administrations in the country to tackle corruption, urging more concerted efforts towards the success of the anti-graft war.

Earlier in his welcome address, the President of the Association, Dr. Saka Adewumi stated that the topic was carefully chosen as UIMGA’s contribution to the current national discourse on corruption and recession. In cushioning effect of recession on parents, Adewumi added that the association had assisted a number of students both at undergraduate and post graduate levels through its Scholarship/Financial Assistance Scheme.  According to him: “Fifty-five (55) undergraduates and eight (8) post-graduate (M.Sc & Ph.D) students had benefited from the scheme and several millions of naira had been committed to the project.”

Also, commenting on the scholarship programme, the General Secretary of the association, Adewusi Shamsideen stated that the scholarship scheme came into existence as part of the resolutions reached at the Education Summit organised by the Association in 2015 adding that several students from various Universities of both post graduate and undergraduate students have benefited from the scheme.

The chairman of the Planning Committee, Dr. Isiaq Lawal Omoniyi praised the Speaker and other Discussants for their in depth treatment of the topic, just as he lauded HRM, Oba Barr. Semiu, Orimadegun Kasali, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo land, Lagos State among other dignitaries present at the occasion.

The occasion was witnessed by members of the Association from various states of the federation and from the Diaspora, members of the university community, dignitaries from all walks of life and various organizations.
