Akure—THE leadership of The National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW in Ondo State yesterday warned its members that it is not a political union.
Chairman of the union, Adetula Ariyo has therefore asked security agencies in the state to deal decisively with any member of the union who plan to cause trouble in the state under any guise.
He warned members that the union should not be politicized by any individual or group of people.
Ariyo in a statement in Akure said: “I want to appeal to all the law enforcement agencies to call those involved to order so as not to puncture the current peace in the state.
“NURTW is not a political union and not for a particular government. I was democratically elected for a four-year tenure and I have just spent eight months in office.
“My constitutional mandate as state chairman is to run the affairs of the union for four years like every other reputable union in the country.”
He noted that before the present administration came to power, members of the union used to chase their officers with cutlasses and guns but since Governor Olusegun Mimiko came on board, he supported the use of constitution and democratic means of changing officers.”
Vanguard gathered that the chairman outburst was as a result of alleged plan by some former union leaders sympathetic to the incoming administration to forcefully sack the present leaders.
The former leaders have reportedly perfected plans to root out the Ariyo led executive which was believed was installed by the outgoing government of governor Mimiko.
Findings showed that the Chairman’s warning was to check mate the other group from carrying out their plans.
