THE United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, in collaboration with Delta State Government, have given a lifeline to 62 vulnerable persons in Bomadi Local Government Area with the provision of walking aids and education materials.

The beneficiaries were selected from six communities in the local government.

State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Rev. Omotsola Williams, at the ceremony, said the programme would be carried out in six different local government areas of Delta State.

Omotsola, alongside Dame Patience Ogbewe, the UNDP Focal Person in Delta, said beneficiaries of the programme were  drawn from two local government areas in each of the three senatorial districts of the state, where she said  UNDP was keen on assisting vulnerable persons and giving them hope for living despite their physical disabilities and social status.

Omotsola, who said the programme was part of UNDP’s social protection activities, noted that it was designed to provide support, including educational support, to orphans and vulnerable children in form of school supplies, financial support and skills acquisition to widows and females.

According to her, “social protection is a right and a powerful instrument for poverty reduction and social cohesion,” adding “that is why we are using this proven instrument to impact on the lives of our people.”

Two of the beneficiaries, Moses Tamara and Bumo Wabene, thanked UNDP for giving them hope for living.

According to them, they had been disabled for over 20 years and resorted to face life in the condition they found themselves before the UNDP help came.
