The Coalition for Stable Democracy (CSD), a pro-democracy group, yesterday, urged INEC to shun acts capable of truncating Nigeria’s democracy, saying the Commission cannot extricate itself from the current tensed political atmosphere in Ondo State.

The group carpeted INEC for subverting the will of the people in a duly conducted primary of the PDP,  which it observed and adjudged to be legal by replacing Eyitayo Jegede with Jimoh Ibrahim as the PDP candidate.

The group, in a statement by its national secretary, Mallam Abdullahi Sanni, said “actions as these are capable of eroding the hard-earned gains recorded by successive administrations and derailing democracy.”

The group urged President Muhammadu Buhari to take keen interest in INEC vis-à-vis all elections so far conducted since May 29, 2015, adding that “what you will see, Your Excellency, is a pattern of actions seemingly calculated to weaken opposition parties.”

“It was the same pattern of political shenanigans embarked upon by the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) that led to the demise of the second republic. Incidentally, it was in the same Ondo State the fire was set by the then ruling government of President Shehu Shagari,’’ it said.
