The 2016 Medical Director’s Cup Football competition of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi Lagos came to an exciting end at the weekend with the Medical Director’s team outclassing the Nurses Department in the final.
In an elaborate ceremony attended by top officials of the hospital, players and soccer enthusiasts climaxing the week-long event saw the Medical Director’s team beating the Nurses team 14 – 13 in a penalty shootout after both teams tied at 2-2.
The Medical Director’s Cup / Interdepartmental Football competition, is an annual event that started last year and is meant to keep the staff of the hospital fit, promote healthy lifestyle, physical and mental well being and team spirit among them.
The excitement was high this year as many staffers of the hospital and other football lovers were thrilled by the soccer artistry displayed by both finalists at the hospital play ground.
Captain of the Medical Director’s team, Johnson Kayode said, “ I feel very excited because we eventually won the trophy. Last year we were second runners up and the desire to improve on our position last year was the motivating factor to us”
Also speaking, captain of Team Group B representing the nurses department who were the defending champions, Kolawole Babatunde gave kudos to his teammates for holding their own. His words: “the competition this year of course, was very fantastic. We tried our best to have come this far”.
In his remarks, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Olurotimi Odunnubi was delighted that the aim of the competition was being achieved. He said, “ I think that the aim has been achieved essentially and it’s not ending here, they will continue to participate in sporting activities.
The aim of the competition is to ensure that people and members of staff of this hospital keep themselves active so that they can be healthy. “
Equally, Dr Emmanuel A. Laiyemo, the chairman of Bones Setters Football Club of the hospital said, “ I am actually happy and delighted that we are able to sustain the Medical Director’s Cup Competition, this is the second edition of the championship and we have a very good medical director in the person of Dr Olurotimi Odunnubi because he is the first dean that we have that supports sports.
