By Funmi Komolafe,
Let’s begin this column this week with a testimony. Someone I am familiar with went on a business trip and she got so exhausted and became worried about how she would board the plane to fly for about 14 hours to return to Nigeria . Suddenly, she found herself singing praises to God while waiting on the long queue to check in.
As she did this, another passenger looked at her and said you seem to like music so much. She simply nodded. Suddenly, she found that the weakness had disappeared . Not only did she have a stress free journey, she got back to Nigeria without any sign of fatigue.
This testimony may appear simple but no testimony is small. She was so exhausted , she thought a wheel chair would be used to put her on the plane. More importantly, the point being made is that praise worship is one of the quickest ways to receive answers to our prayers.
This week,we’ll consider the issue of troubled marriages.Let’s look at one who is married but troubled. What could be the cause or causes of a troubled marriage.
The issues vary. For some it is unfaithfulness; for others it is a feeling of being caged or inability to achieve set goals such as child-bearing, financial stagnation or even limitation.
A particular child may throw trouble into his parents’marriage by making them unhappy.
Consequently, the man or woman who finds himself or herself in a situation such as this begins to think of calling it quits.
This issue is pertinent now because of the economic realities of our country and its stress on families.
It’s gotten so bad that people are beginning to commit suicide as a result of inability to meet financial obligations.
People who were seen as highly placed are struggling to make ends meet.
The Holy Bible gives us the origin of these challenges which are either physical or spiritual even as we are assured that we can overcome by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5 verses 19 to 21 states: “ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath , strike, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings and such like of the which I tell you before”.
Our assurance of overcoming is found in the same Galatians 5 vs. 16:” This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh”.
It continues in verse 17: “ For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary from one to the other; so that ye cannot do the things that ye would .”
Verse 18 states: “ But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law”.
Whatever the challenge, this is the time to demonstrate our total faith in God.
Many marriages are in trouble, today, because couples have failed to live according to the word of God.
Spouses have failed to appreciate each other. A wife still needs to show appreciation for the efforts of the husband in providing for the family. Just as the husband also needs to appreciate his wife for caring for the family even in cases where she is the breadwinner.
When we appreciate God, He shows up in our lives with testimonies.
In the same vein, human beings like to be appreciated.
Many marriages are in trouble because of lack of contentment.
Some are in the habit of comparing the modest achievements of their spouses with others’ who appear to have ‘made it’.
I’ll share the testimony of the lady who had been married for years waiting on the Lord to have a child.
Her situation seemed so hopeless that even her husband began to give up.
Unknown to her, the husband had gotten into a relationship with a lady who began to boast that she could give him a son within nine months. The pressure on the man was so much that it resulted in strained relationship with his wife.
However, the woman remained steadfast in prayer. She struggled with her emotions to play the good wife but this didn’t go a long way in solving the problem.
Then , one night, she slept and the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Truth spoke to her.
Mind you, she never heard off or met this lady who was putting pressure on her husband.
The Spirit of God spoke to her: “ X go and tell your husband that all his children will come from you X and not Miss H”.
Being a person in the Lord, she knew clearly it was the voice of God which must be obeyed.
She woke up her husband and told her what the Holy Spirit told her. The man was dumbfounded.
He knew that his wife did not know Miss H neither had she heard about her.
Why have I narrated this story? It is because we must, at every point in time, realize that whatever we do in secret, there is a superior power that sees all and even knows the step we are about to take before we take such step.
To the glory of God, it was not long after this that the woman conceived and had a son.
Everyone that knew her congratulated the couple. The husband later confessed to the wife that there was truly a Miss H who put him under pressure.
On the day of the naming, Miss H could not summon the courage to attend the naming ceremony but her friend did.
Following the birth of the baby boy, the man put an end to his relationship with Miss H.
Is your marriage under threat? As a believer, quarreling with your spouse is not the answer. The solution to that challenge and every other challenge is Jesus.
Look unto Jesus and your victory is assured.
The Lord will empower us to have control over the flesh in the name of Jesus.
Get familiar with the Holy Spirit – Whatever we may be trusting God for, it is important that we get familiar with the Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Spirit that led the exhausted lady mentioned earlier to begin to sing unto the Lord and that was the key to her strength.
It was the relationship the woman whose marriage was threatened had with God that saved her marriage.
There are several ways to connect with the Spirit of God. First is total submission to God. We can then enrich this relationship with prayer, praise worship , dedication to the work of God, among others.
As believers, we must be hopeful and find time to appreciate the visible and invisible work of God in our lives.
We must acknowledge all the time that what appears to be our achievements was not attained by human efforts only. For it is written in Zechariah 4 verse 6:….. “This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit’, saith the LORD of hosts”.
When we appreciate God, we are bound to reap far more than we have sowed.
Remember our God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.
Make a conscious effort to relate with the Holy Spirit and your joy will never cease in the name of Jesus.
