A prominent Islamic cleric, Mallam Usman Ahmed, has commended the efforts of Esan North East Local Government to rid the council of social deviants. This commendation was made in Uromi following the arrest of some men suspected to be involved in anti-social activities at the weekend in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area(LGA) of Edo State.
This is coming following the upsurge of political activities in Edo State in the build up to the September 10 governorship elections Efforts by our reporter to get an update on the case at the Divisional Crime Officer’s office at the Uromi Divisional Headquarters of the Police did not yield much fruit, but according to a source close to the LGA, the two suspects Jude Okodede and Kelly Itua, arrested in connection with the case and who are now in police custody, have confessed to being gays for some time now.
Okodede and Itua also revealed that some of their gay partners whose names they gave as Ihayere Kingsley and Augustine Inerhunwa, who were still at large as the time of compiling this report, may have fled the country for overseas for fear of being lynched or persecuted.
The case of Ihayere Kingsley, it was further learnt is particularly worrisome as he was a known youth leader of the now opposition party; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the town. Meanwhile, there are speculations that he may have been set up by political enemies, who may want to tarnish his name and that of his family for possible political gain.
