Murray clinches record 5th Queen’s Club title

All week it has taken the scent of danger to bring the best of Andy Murray, and that again proved the case as he broke records at Queen’s Club.

Down 7-6 3-0 and faced with a superb performance by Milos Raonic it seemed that his dream of a fifth Aegon Championships title was slipping away.

But the world No 2 then turned on the afterburners to finally defuse the Canadian’s surprisingly rounded power game and defeat him 6-7 6-4 6-3 to win a fifth title, making him the most successful player ever at the prestigious Wimbledon warm-up.

The quality of the match was such that the sub-plot of Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe was reduced to a sideshow, because the two players produced a level of play that could only whet the appetite for the big fortnight.

It was all about Murray finding a way to break down the Raonic serve, and ultimately he did that in spectacular style to earn the most hard-fought of wins in two hours and thirteen minutes.

The fact that the likes of McEnroe and Boris Becker have won four of these titles show how sought after they are to win, and overtaking them will be among the Scot’s proud career achievements.

Much attention was bound to focus on the two boxes as the players came out, but in truth there was no much to discern. Lendl was the less active, sitting slumped back in his chair with a tracksuit top wrapped around his shoulders, only moving to have the odd word with Jamie Delgado and have a sip of his water bottle.
