Benin city, the Edo State capital stood still yesterday, when the chairman of the state Economic Team, Mr Godwin Obaseki officially declared his intention to run for the 2016 governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC). In his declaration, Obaseki said, “It will be a sin against God and my people if I walk away from Edo state with the knowledge and experience that I have gathered. It will be unpatriotic not to stand and be counted. Over the last thirty years I have had successful experience in the private sector and over the last seven years I have been part of the most successful administration in Nigeria which is Edo state”.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has stated that despite some of the problems the party seems to be facing at the moment, its national convention has been slated for May 21, 2016 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State . Governor Fayose who was responding to the purported dissolution of the National Working Committee of the party by a group of concerned party members led by Professor Jerry Gana, insisted that those against the leadership of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff have lost relevance in the party as they no longer have fresh ideas to bring forward.

A renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr. Mike Ozokheme has lambasted president Mohmmadu Buhari and the federal government of All Progressives Congress, for unilaterally jerking up the pump price of petrol to an unprecedented N145 from N86.50, saying it was unacceptable.

Last week a group in the name of Niger Delta Avengers blew up the Chevron oil platform, signaling the return of militias. They made some demands, including the blighted Niger Delta oil spills that require remediation. In January, there was a similar bombing of a similar oil facility. There is an upwelling of unauthorized quasi-military group using weapons, arms and ammunition in the Niger Delta.
