Delta State Council of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday, said that its leaders will visit the less privileged in the state as part of activities to mark this year’s Workers Day, assuring workers that congress would strive to initiate laudable programmes in the interest of workers at every given opportunity.

Factional Chairman of the council,  Williams Akporeha, in a statement, said: “In line with this year’s May Day theme, Inclusive Socio-economic space for sustainable development, leadership of the state congress has planned to visit orphanages in Warri and Effurun, not only to assure inmates that state workers and society care for them, but also to build confidence in the inmates that even in their situation, they can still participate in celebrating workers day.”

According to him, it had become customary for Congress in Delta State to add value to the celebration of May Day each year by initiating people oriented activities to herald the day, noting, “This year, Congress has decided to mark 2016 May Day celebration in Warri in collaboration with non-governmental organisations and civil rights groups in a bid to assure the general public that NLC belongs to the people. The state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who is the Special Guest of Honour will lead other government functionaries to the event deliberately designed to take congress to the people.”

He recalled that in previous years, congress, under his leadership, collaborated with some stakeholders to organise a two-weeks ‘Labour Product and Services Fair’ as well as a symposium on workers- related issues.
