AFCON 2017 qualifiers: Super Eagles open camp early March against Egypt

Abuja – The Super Eagles will open camp in the first week of March in preparation for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Egypt, an official has said.

Chris Green, the Executive Committee member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said in Abuja on Thursday that preparations were in top gear for the first leg encounter with the Egyptians.

The match, which was earlier scheduled to hold at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna on March 23, has now been set to hold on March 25 at the same venue.

“The team will open camp by first week of next month (March) with the home-based players.

“Six to seven days to the match Egypt, the international players will arrive.

“Super Eagles is Super Eagles; there is no dichotomy, there is no home-based; there is no foreign-based; they are all professionals.

“And so those playing outside will now join the home-based and they will come about a team and when they come about making a team that is the team that will play the Egyptians.’’

CAF had given Nigeria the latitude to pick any day between March 23 and March 26 for the match, with NFF deciding on March 25.

The continental football body had also given Egypt the option of picking any day from March 26 and March 29 for the return-leg encounter in Egypt.

Meanwhile, CAF has now appealed to NFF to pick a new date that would ensure two full days of rest for the players ahead of the second leg.

Egypt, which has 6 points from 2 matches, lead Group G, which has Chad and Tanzania.

Nigeria is second in the group with four points also from two matches, while Tanzania and Chad are trailing behind on one point and zero point after 2 matches respectively.
