ORGANISED labour yesterday issued a two-week ultimatum to the management of Egbin Power Plant to pay compensation to workers at its Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos station, whose property were allegedly lost or destroyed during forceful evacuation by the company last week.

The Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Works yesterday, attributed the delay in the early completion of Ago-Palace/Okota road, Isolo, to several lawsuits instituted by residents of the area against the state government.

If a man must struggle through school and finally graduate into unemployment; if the system is such that enables the few lucky ones who are said to be working to be owed backlogs of salaries, sometimes for upwards of 24 months; and meanwhile retirement has become a death sentence as many pensioners have perished, “waiting for the dead-man’s shoes”, as it were, then, there is something fundamentally wrong. And in our type of situation, every window of opportunity should be explored to the limits.

Less than a month after President Muhammadu Buhari visited France, Nigeria could begin to reap the fruits of that trip as the French government said it has bridged the divide between France and Nigeria.
