HON. Sergius Ogun
By Bartholomew Madukwe
A MEMBER of the House of Representatives, Mr. Sergius Ogun, who is representing Esan North-East/South-East Federal Constituency of Edo State, in this interview, speaks on the allegation of corrupt practices against the Senate President and confab report among other issues.
There are concerns over the fate of the confab report. Do you think the Buhari administration should implement it?
I think most of the recommendations should be implemented. Nigerians sat down together, under one roof, and discussed Nigeria. The report has cure for most of the defects and decay the present administration is grappling with. Hence, I will advise the president to send the report to the National Assembly as the only route to becoming law.
What do you make of the prosecution of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB?
I am a strong advocate of calls for those, who run contrary to the law to face the law. Did the CCB just wake up from slumber? Is this a witch hunt?
You have spent 100 days in the House. How would you describe the journey so far?
An American musician, Warren G, said, “Leadership is the ability to transform vision into reality.” This succinctly paints a vivid and lucid portrait of my 100 days score card. Starting from the historic landslide victory which validated my parliamentary ambition at the March 29, 2015 National Assembly polls, I went to the drawing board almost immediately and swung into action, eight clear weeks before the National Assembly was formally inaugurated on June 9, 2015.
I successfully organized a five-day empowerment seminar for 210 farmers in my constituency in July 2015. The farmers were trained and taught how to produce cassava bread, cassava cake, cassava chin-chin, cassava buns, cassava strips, cocoyam crisps, salad cream and fruit juice by seasoned resource personnel from the National Root Crop Research Institute (NRCRI) Umudike Abia State.
The gains of the programme will begin to materialize soonest as many of the farmers are warming up to go into production of the aforesaid items on a commercial scale which would translate into economic boom and self sufficiency in the long run.
Do you have plans for the unemployed in your constituency?
I have single-handedly sponsored 189 indigent young school leavers to embark on a four-month intensive training programme in various vocations at the National Institute of Construction Technology, Uromi.
The 189 beneficiaries who are on full scholarship formally commenced the programme in August 2015.
