Lagos — The Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, yesterday frowned at the continued surge in fake ICT products in the Nigerian market.
Director Laboratory services of the organization Mr Louis Njoku, who was guest of honour at the launch of Tecno Phanton 5 smartphone, in Lagos yesterday, said that part of the ways to curtail this menace was to have Original Equipment Manufacturers; OEMs begin to site their manufacturing plants in Nigeria.
Njoku however warned it would no longer be business as usual for counterfeiters with the newly reviewed SON Act, promising that the organization would apprehend and jail makers and importers of fake products in the country unless they desist from the shameful act.
According to Njoku, “we are pained by a lot of fake and substandard products, especially in the mobile phone sector. We are also pained that consumers are buying products which can only contribute negatively to their health.
“Initially, we were only able to bark without effective power to bite. But with the review of the SON act, we can seize substandard goods, prosecute their owners and make sure they go to jail. Not like before we had to go to a third party to prosecute.
Today we are telling people to beware. We are now more than ever prepared to bark and bite effectively”.
He also added: “we are urging Tecno to begin to think of how to make their phones in Nigeria. We know that from onset you have followed due process and that is why your growth here should not be a surprise to anybody. You are going to reach the greatest height in this country if you follow our advise”.
Earlier in his welcome speech, Managing Director, Tecno Nigeria, Mr Chidi Okonkwo said that Tecno had seen impressive growth curve in business in the last decade, even as the company continued to expand reach in other markets.
He said that “in Nigeria alone, our human capital has increased by approximately 200 percent; all local staff. This can also be seen as a testament to our strong resolve in becoming one of the Nigeria’s most influential brands by the next decade.
“Way back in 2007, TECNO Mobile proved that global best technology can be localized to solve market specific problems so, when we launched T780-the first truly dual SIM phone in Nigeria, it was a success”.
