Players from 28 countries have confirmed their participation in the 2015 Lagos International Badminton Classics billed for the Sir Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Rowe Park, Lagos, July 15 through 18.
The tournament, regarded as the biggest in the history of Badminton in Africa has $15,000 (N3m) as cash prizes and will be shared among winners in five categories; the men’s singles, women’s singles, men and women doubles and the mixed doubles.
According to Chairman of the Lagos State Badminton Association, Francis Orbih, players from Britain, France, Russia, USA and 24 other countries have confirmed their participation in the International Badminton Federation-sanctioned tournament. “This shows an increase in the number of countries coming for the Classics,” Orbih said, recalling that “last year we had 15 countries in attendance.”
A proud Orbih remarked, “Last year when we had only 15 countries in attendance, the International Badminton Federation observed that the 2014 Lagos International Classics was the biggest Badminton tournament ever held in Africa.
