Libya’s court of appeal has set the final sentence date for former leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime officials’ trial. Al-Seddig Al-Sur, the Chief of Investigations office of the Attorney General, on Thursday in Tripoli, said after hearing the defence case, the court set June 28 as final date of sentence of 37 Gaddafi regime officials. He said the verdicts of June 28 would be the final.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr Benjamin Dikki, said the Federal Government spent over N373 billion to settle former workers of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Thursday by BPE’s Head of Public Communications, Mr Alex Okoh.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, has warned security details attached to government officials against engaging in as domestic chores for their principals. Arase gave the warning at an interactive session with police inspectors and other rank and file personnel selected from commands nationwide at the Police Headquarters in Abuja.

Hundreds of people on Thursday besieged the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu to pay their last respects to Sen. Uche Chukwumerije who was en route Abia for burial. Chukwumerije, also a former minister of information, died in Abuja on April 19 after a protracted illness. Leading the pack were members of Ohaneze Ndigbo, the socio-cultural organization of the Igbo, including its president, Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey.

Government officials and politicians in Burundi have confirmed that protesters have again rejected President Pierre Nkurunziza, but have called for calm in the country. They said another round of street clashes and gunfire erupted again on Thursday in Bujumbura. Meanwhile, Nkurunziza in a state broadcast on Wednesday night, stressed the need for national unity, saying that Burundi’s bloody past, including a civil war that only ended in 2005 after the death of 300,000 people, could not be ignored.

Member states of the World Health Organisation (WHO) have adopted a new global malaria strategy for 2016 to 2030, the global health body said on Thursday. It said the strategy aimed to reduce the global disease burden by 40 per cent by 2020 and by no more than 90 per cent by 2030.
It also planned to eliminate malaria in no less than 35 new countries by 2030.

An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court in Wuse Zone 2 on Thursday sentenced one Emeka Nnate to one month in prison or pay N100 as fine for attempting to commit an offence. The senior magistrate, Aminu Eri, convicted Nnate, a student of no fixed address, after he pleaded guilty of the offence leveled against him.
