Gov Ibikunle Amosun
By Daud Olatunji
ABEOKUTA—Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state, Prince Gboyega Isiaka, have traded words over the alleged removal and destruction of billboards and posters belonging to the latter.
Isiaka had accused Amosun, who is the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress, of intolerance and undue witch-hunting of opposition in the race for the general elections.
But, in a swift reaction, Amosun, through the Director of Media of his campaign organisation, Mr Femi Sowoolu, denied the allegation.
“It is not true and a mere figment of imagination,” the governor said.
Isiaka, who had accused Amosun of intolerance while reacting to the complete removal of two movable billboards bearing his picture, which were placed at OPIC roundabout, Oke-Ilewo and NNPC junction, Moshood Abiola Way, in Abeokuta, blamed the development on the agents of Amosun.
He said the governor, who is seeking re-election on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, had been intolerant of opposition politicians and parties.
“This is not the first time this would happen. In the last one month, our posters have been destroyed by agents of Senator Ibikunle Amosun all over the state and we feel that there should be an end to this impunity,” he added.
He argued that if there was any payment default, the necessary agency ought to have marked the billboards and asked him to pay up rather than destroying them.
“We can only infer that someone is getting desperate and he thinks the only way out of it is to destroy people’s posters all over the place,” Isiaka said.
But, in his further reaction, Sowoolu said: “Governor Amosun has strictly followed the rules of fair play throughout his campaign activity.
“His efforts of performance in less than four years are evident for all to see, and he is much loved, cherished and supported by the good people of Ogun State.
“The Governor therefore has no reasons whatsoever to resort to such behavior and it would be a rather unfortunate claim by the opposition, if truly it were made.”
