Ogun teachers, Amosun disagree over strike, allowance

ABEOKUTA—GOVERNOR Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state, weekend, traded words over the commencement of strike action embarked upon by the teachers.

While the teachers under the auspices of National Union of Teachers and Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) accused the governor of engaging in failed promises and embarked on strike,  Amosun said only irresponsible teachers will go on strike.

The teachers had embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demand for the payment of the whole salary, saying, the government has only paid part of their salaries contrary to its promise.

Addressing a joint press conference in Abeokuta, the NUT and ASSUS leaders said they embarked on an indefinite strike because the governor has refused to pay 27.5 per cent salary he had promised to pay them last year October.

The teachers vowed to continue with the strike they had started last week, saying it would not be called off until the governor fulfills the promises he made over their allowance and deduction from their salaries.

Chairman of ASUSS in the state, Akeem Lasisi, said the governor was scheduled to meet with the leaders of the unions on Saturday, January 17, but sent some government officials instead.
