LAGOS—A 55-year-old woman, Oluwatoyin Salawu, sobbed uncontrollably at a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, yesterday, when a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy and assault was read to her.

Salawu, who also cried out loudly, claimed innocence of the offences.

“I am innocent of the offences, I do not understand all the charges read to me,” she told the court.

The mother of the accused also broke down in tears as she pleaded for leniency for her daughter, who she claimed knew nothing about the case.

The accused, a civil servant, who lives at No. 28, Daddy Alaja St., Oke-Arin, Lagos Island, is facing a six-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful interference with public property, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and assault.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Ighodalo, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on September 17, at Oke-Arin, Lagos Island.

He alleged that the accused and other occupants of the house had done illegal connection to get electricity.

“They were warned to disconnect the illegal power supply, but they refused.

“A team of electricity workers went to disconnect them and in the process Salawu assaulted them.

“She slapped one Babatunde Bello and Henry Olayokun, tore their shirts and ordered them to leave the house, “ Ighodalo said.

He said the offences contravened Sections 166 (d), 170, 172, 338 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr M.L. Owolabi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N40,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case to October 6 for mention.
