2015: US offers support to INEC for credible polls

PORT HARCOURT—THE United States of America has promised to assist the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to achieve credible elections in 2015.

Chief Political Secretary, American Consulate in Nigeria, Mr. Thomas Hines, who spoke in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday when he visited the Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, in his office, said his country will support in capacity building and other related areas, adding that the US was determined to assist the nation strengthen its democracy.

He said that his country had resolved to assist in the building of a virile democracy in the country in partnership with Nigeria, adding that the move was largely informed by the  warm relationship between the two countries.

“We will assist Nigeria as much as we can to ensure free, fair and acceptable elections in February. We will achieve this through partnership in training of staff and providing necessary education for credible elections,” he said.
