ABEOKUTA—No fewer than 49,000 applicants, including some PhD holders and over 600 Master’s degree holders have so far applied as environmental marshals across the state.Only 3,000 environmental marshals to ensure healthy environment in the state are needed.
Governor Ibikunle Amosun announced this yesterday, at a reception in honour of state winners at 2013 President’s teacher and school excellence award.
Amosun said he had suspended the plan to recruit the 3,000 environmental marshals due to overwhelming applications. Amosun had in June announced plan to recruit 3,000 environmental marshals. The governor lamented the high rate of unemployment in the country.
According to him, no fewer than 14,000 applicants had recently applied for employment in the state’s civil service and said there was urgent need for concerned authorities to develop strategic plan towards addressing the acute problem of unemployment.
He said “If we have about 600 of those with Master’s qualification and above running around for a job that they would be paid N20, 000, then you know that there is a problem. The other time when I met with civil and public servants, I told them that if they have children looking for work and have put in more than 10 years that they should apply. I can tell you that today more than 14,000 have applied.”
