Complete Ajaokuta steel before 2015, delegates urge FG

DELEGATES, Tuesday, strongly advised the Federal Government to ensure the completion of the abandoned Ajaokuta Iron and Steel that has been left idle for 14 years before the 2015 general election.

According to the report of the Senator Musa Adede-led Committee on Transport presented for deliberation yesterday, the uncompleted project requires less than 40 billion to bring it to life.

The Committee also recommends that all airports in the country must be open 24 hours and foreign airlines should employ Nigerians.

Presenting the report, Senator Musa Adede said: “The Ajaokuta Warri rail line was awarded in 1986, with the total completion of five years. As I speak to you, 14 years after, that project has not been completed. For us to realise our steel sector the Ajaokuta warri rail line should be completed. So, it is the committee’s view that this project must be completed and commissioned before 2015 as what is required to complete it is less than 40 billion Naira, and the more we continue to delay the more it will cost us to complete.”

The committee recommended integrated transport infrastructural development that will instantly appreciate steel and align materials for use in road transportation, housing and remodeling both at Ajaokuta and Osogbo Steel Rolling mills should be deployed.

On Aviation, the Committee rejected plans to merge the three agencies in aviation industry, recommending that they should be returned to status quo, adding, “the 2013 National Civil Aviation rule should be further reviewed by the stakeholders as initial review process seems to have excluded some stakeholders.”
