LAGOS—Lagos State government weekend said no fewer than 6, 627 motor vehicle accidents were recorded in the state last year, even as 592 motor vehicle accidents were recorded alone in January 2014.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, who gave the figures in statistics released in Alausa, Ikeja, noted that the number of motor vehicle accidents recorded in the state last year was higher than the data of 2012.

According to the statistics,”5, 225 motor vehicle accidents were recorded in the state in 2012. A breakdown show that 2,799 auto-crashes were recorded between January and June 2012, as against the second half of the year where the number of motor vehicle reduce drastically to 406.

“The reduction in auto-crashes within these months was at the time when the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola signed the 2012 Lagos Road Traffic Law.”

The record showed that in the year under review, 3,032 auto-crashes occurred in the first half of the year in Lagos state but the number of motor vehicle accidents increased between July and December, 2013, while 3,595 were recorded in the other half.

On motorcycles, 12 persons died and 1,622 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in 2013 from motorcycle accidents. The statistics showed that more people sustained injuries than death in the year under review. In January 2014, 127 victims received treatment in the public medical facilities from motorcycle accidents while only one death was recorded.
