THE Committee on Political Parties and Electoral Matters has unanimously endorsed independent candidacy to encourage willing and qualified Nigerians without party platforms to contest political positions.

As part of its recommendations on Monday, the committee also made a strong case for the existence of strong, ideological parties to deepen democracy in the country.
Former Senate President and Co- Chairman of the committee, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, said that a two-party system would have been stabilized in the nation’s political history by now if not for successive military interventions which truncated the process.
