AKURE — HUNDREDS of students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, yesterday, trooped to the streets to protest the death of one of them who was knocked down by a car.

The students, whose identity could not be ascertained at press time was knocked down yesterday.

Immediately the incident happened, the students trooped to the streets while the driver of the Toyota Corolla car was saved from being lynched. Police image maker, Wole Ogodo, said the driver is already in Police custody.

Details of the incident remained sketchy at press time.

Meanwhile, the university authorities in a statement, last night, said the protest was sequel to the killing of one of their fellow students on Akungba main road by a Toyota car.

The statement signed by the institution’s Registrar, Bamidele Olotu, said: “The students’ spontaneous reaction was sparked by misinformation that the deceased was knocked down by a mini bus called agolo in local parlance and that the assailant driver ran away.

“This misinformation has since been refuted by the Police who confirmed that the driver reported himself at the Police station and that he and the Toyota Corolla car were in their custody.

“This clarification has calmed the nerves of the rampaging students and the situation has since been brought under control.

“The corpse has been released to the parents and has since been buried.

“The university expresses deep condolences to the family of the deceased, the students body and the entire university community on the unfortunate loss of the promising young man.

“The university would like to appeal to all students to go about their normal academic activities as peace has now returned to the campus.”

Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the university as policemen have been deployed to maintain peace.”
