Protesting PHCN workers
…Retains former PHCN employees
BY CHRIS OCHAYI
ABUJA: As the six months employment contracts offered employees of defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, expired, the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, has re-engaged 2,265 workers to reposition and strengthen the operational needs of the company.
The six month contract deal was part of the agreement reached with labour unions at the time of handing over the unbundled assets of PHCN to the new private owners in November 2013
In pursuit of this objectives, the company engaged human resources and change consultants to carry out a comprehensive and professional skills assessment of the company by interviewing all staff.
In general terms, staff retained have proven records with regard to their credentials, skills or qualifications for their assigned jobs and also on performance, which necessitated the consideration of 2,265, who would be issued with letters of appointment.
The AEDC management is optimistic that the staff it offered employment would help secure the viability and success of the organisation in meeting the goals of its establishment.
There are prospects to recruit more staff in certain key areas where specialist skills are required and more also, there are provisions for training of staff to ensure continued alignment between staff skills and organisational goals.
Commenting on the development, the Managing Director AEDC, Mr. Neil Croucher, expressed joy for the re-employment of many of the former PHCN staff.
“We appreciate the cooperation, we have enjoyed from all the workers during these six months of transition and we are happy to be embarking on this journey going forward.”
