LAGOS—WIFE of Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola weekend urged the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the bill to establish the National Social Security Agency, which has been on the floor of the house since 2011.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu in 2011, sponsored the bill to establish the agency which would provide financial assistance to the elderly persons and other matters.
Speaking at the Valentine season at the Retirement Villa, Lekki, tagged ‘Senior Valentine’, to celebrate the aged, Fashola lamented that the country was not doing enough for the elderly.
She said: “The bill is an avenue for the lawmakers to pay their dues to the aged in the country. And if they think that they don’t want to pass the bill and make life more meaningful for the aged people, it is left for them.
“But they should remember that one day; they will all get to the stage where they will not be able to run around as they use to. There isn’t anyone that would not get to this stage. And because of this, we should always be careful and do the right thing at the right time.
“My own belief is that we must always take good care of the elderly. It doesn’t mean it must be your parent or relatives but everybody. We should love our elders and make life meaningful for them.
