ABUJA— President of Trade Union Congress, TUC, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama, has tasked the Federal Government to act fast to save Nigerians from fuel scarcity during this festive period, following threats by NUPENG and PENGASSIN to embark on strike over proposed sale of the nation’s refineries.
The leaderships of NUPENG and PENGASSIN had condemned alleged plan by the Federal Government to sell the refineries and threatened to withdraw their services, if the government did not reverse the decision.
Addressing journalists at the weekend, Mr. Kaigama advised the Federal Government to ensure that it commenced discussions with the two unions to save Nigerians from the untold hardship the strike could cause.
The TUC President noted that any strike embarked upon by the unions could lead to scarcity of petroleum products within this period which would also result in hike of the products by independent marketers.
He said Nigeria had witnessed series of prolonged strike because government failed to involve relevant stakeholders while making policies and also always adamant when there was a strike threat only to start running helter skelter midway into strike.
Kaigama also raised the alarm that there were danger signals ahead of 2014 and advised the political class to reflect on the dynamics of true democracy.
The alarm on the looming danger is coming on the heels of the controversial letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan alleging that the administration was heading for anarchy.
He advised the ruling class to work towards uplifting the national life of the citizenry and the unity of Nigeria.
