UGHELLI—POLICE have arrested a ward Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State over the September 7 attack on the Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof Patrick Muoboghare.
He was allegedly apprehended by some youths in Ohoro, who took him to the “A” Divisional Police Station, Ughelli.
It was gathered at press time that the said ward chairman had been taken to Asaba for interrogation.
A source, who gave a different version, said that the ward chairman was kidnapped on Saturday night by a group of youths and held in the bush overnight, adding: “He was manhandled by the youths, but luck ran out of them when they were taking him from Ohoro to Uwheru, as they were intercepted by men of the Federal Highway patrol, who rescued him.”
The suspect was alleged to be among those whose houses were destroyed in a recent invasion of Uwheru community by gunmen.
Mr. Igho Aragba, who told Vanguard that he was among those that handed the party leader to the police, said: “When we came from Ughelli, he refused to enter my car, so we had to charter a taxi to take him to Ughelli. On our way to Ughelli Police Station, between Ohoro and Uwheru, he, on sighting men of the Federal Highway patrol, brought out his head through the window and raised alarm, which attracted the police.
“The police stopped us to ask what happened and we told them what had happened on September 7, and that we were taking him to the police station. He has been on the run, but thank God some of our youths apprehended him. When he insisted that he would no longer go with us, the police decided to use their patrol van to take him to the station and handed him over the Ughelli police.
“This morning, (yesterdaya0, police came from Asaba to take him, so he is at the police headquarters now as we speak.”
