The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has called on the Federal Government to create office of Surgeon-General to determine fitness of public officers rendered incapacitated either by ill-health or accidents.
NMA President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, made the call at a briefing against the backdrop of crisis trailing the assumption of office by Taraba State governor, Danbaba Suntai, who arrived the country about two weeks ago after 10 months of medical treatment in Germany and United States.
According to him, the current political crisis in Taraba State would have been avoided had the office of the Surgeon-General existed to conduct an independent assessment of the fitness of the governor.
He said existence of office of a Surgeon-General would have saved the nation the embarrassment and distress caused by the crisis in Taraba State.
