Ogun PDP takes Amosun’s govt to task on cholera outbreak

By DAUD OLATUNJI

ABEOKUTA — The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  in Ogun State, yesterday, faulted the claims of the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, that it was politicising the cholera outbreak in some parts of the state.

A statement by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Waliu Oladipupo, said it merely urged the state government to live up to its responsibility and stem the tide of the cholera outbreak, rather than hiding behind some medical jargons.

The party reminded the government that it has a primary responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.

“We wish to state for the umpteenth time that if the ACN-led government had been up to its responsibilities of promoting healthy living, provision of quality healthcare and potable water, rather than some white elephant projects that have brought pain and anguish to our people, this epidemic would have been avoided.

“The government is glossing over a very serious health issue that has, even by its own admission, claimed over 100 lives in Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Odeda and Obafemi Owode local government areas,” the party said.

It called on the Federal Government, the World Health Organisation, WHO, Doctors Across Borders, DAB, and other relevant institutions to come to the aid of the state.

The ACN had  cautioned the PDP against playing politics with  the outbreak of gastroenteritis in the state.

The party in a statement issued, Wednesday, by the Publicity Secretary of the party in the state,  Sola Lawal  described as “cheap politics” the call by the PDP in the state that the World Health Organisation, WHO, should quickly come to the aid of the people against further spread of the disease.
