Warri Wolves were a pitiable sight at the Delta State FA Cup final on Sunday.
They fell short of the standard many expected from a Premier League side. They were so awful that many left the Warri City Stadium calling for changes in the team.
But they have been a poor side for years and only exposed themselves more in the FA Cup final that was colourful and attracted many football experts in the country. Jay Jay Okocha, a member of Delta FA was the match coordinator. Another ex international of repute, Victor Ikpeba attended. He is also a member of Delta FA.
Davidson Onwumi, Edema Fuludu and Austin Popo were among the ex stars at the stadium. CAF coordinator, Paul Bassey, former NFA chairman and a member of the CAF family, Dominic Oneya attended the match that had Speaker of Delta House of Assembly, Victor Ochei as the special guest. Jibril Aku, the MD of Ecobank, the sponsors was there. They were all treated to bad football by the players and superb ceremony by the FA led by Amaju Pinnick. The crowd was
reasonable especially on a day and time that Chelsea were engaging Manchester United in England. Good crowd, good organisation but a poor play is the best was to describe the irony. Delta FA organised an exciting FA Cup final that was live on supersport.
They were commended for a great job on the day veteran sports journalist Paul Bassey was honoured with the award of sports personality of the year. Pa John Ojidoh, John Oganwu, Ignatius Ajuonuma also received befitting awards. Tiwa Savage and Davido thrilled the fans at half time. The atmosphere was great but the game dull. For a side that is well funded, they needed to give the fans more. Wolves lacked flair, passion and hunger.
They needed a late minute penalty to beat J Atete FC, an amateur side that appeared a better side but lacked the experience to convert the chances they created. Their game was also poor.
‘’I can’t believe Wolves are this bad,’’ Victor Ikpeba lamented. ‘’They should overhaul the team,’’ he added. Jay Jay Okocha said that they lacked passion in everything they did on the field.
‘’One boy that played for Delta United more than seven years ago is still one of the stars in Warri Wolves. It means something is wrong somewhere,’’ Elderton Kuejebola, a member of Delta State Sports Commission and an ardent football promoter and sponsor said. Journalists, stakeholders and fans thumbed down for Wolves. Etu Moses, club spokesman admitted that the club needed fresh blood but explained that the coaches left some players on the bench.
