AKURE — A 90-year-old former President of the Master Bakers Association of Nigeria, Ondo State Chapter, Alhaji Musa Adisa, has been abducted by a three armed gang while on his way to the mosque.
Adisa popularly known as Labaika was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday from his 121, Isolo Street, Akure residence.
Vanguard gathered that he was on his way to observe his early morning prayers at a mosque located about 20 metres from his house when the kidnappers struck.
Eyewitness account said the kidnappers arrived the residence in a red Toyota Camry which they parked beside the mosque.
A young member of the congregation who said he arrived at the mosque early to call for prayers confirmed that the kidnappers pounced on the old man immediately they sighted him.
According to him, two members of the gang seized him and covered his mouth before forcing him into their waiting vehicle.
Our source added that they drove off immediately and started shooting sporadically to scare people away.
The Ijapo Police Station was informed by the family and immediately signals were sent to other police formations just as detectives were deployed across the state to fish out the kidnappers.
Speaking with newsmen, one of the sons of the victim, Alhaji Musibau Iyiola who succeeded his father as the new President of the association confirmed the abduction of his father.
Alhaji Iyiola who appealed to the kidnappers to release his father said that he has been sick for some time due to old age and was always managing to walk across to the mosque to observe his prayers.
The Police Image Maker Wole Ogodo could not be reached on phone for comment but a police source said that a signal to that effect has been sent to the police Headquarters from the Ijapo police station where the family of the victim reported the matter.
This latest abduction brought the number of such cases within the last two months to three.
A nursing mother and female reporter with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Akure, Mrs. Olubunmi Oke, the wife of a former Minister of Petroleum Mrs. Taye David-West.
It will be recalled that the families of the victims parted with large sums of monies before they were released by the kidnappers.
The State Police Commissioner Patrick Dukumor last week paraded 12 kidnappers arrested in the state within the last two months and promised that those on the run will soon be apprehended.
Dukumor said that those in police net will be arraigned in court after police investigation.
