Reps allege plot to impeach Tambuwal

By Soni Daniel

Abuja – attempts believed to be spearheaded by top government officials to unseat Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has reportedly hit the rock, leaving the masterminds disappointed.

The impeachment move, which took most of the Reps by surprise, surfaced on Wednesday, just as the lawmakers resumed from their two-month vacation.

A competent source in the legislature confirmed last night that the move to unseat Tambuwal was actually hatched by those he referred to as ‘top elements from outside the National Assembly,’ who are aggrieved over the way he (Tambuwal) was conducting the affairs of the House.

The source, who does not want to be named, said, however, that the impeachment plot failed to the chagrin of the sponsors because they could not recruit enough supporters.

The source said: “The move to unseat Tambuwal was hatched by some influential persons in the administration, who fear that the Speaker was not following their path. That is the point and it is very unfortunate at this point in the history of our democracy.

“Tambuwal is not worried because he believes that he should work for the overall well-being of Nigerians on whose mandate he stands.”

“The protagonists of the move failed to achieve their goal because the matter leaked to the rest of the members even before the conclusion of the discussion and it became a hard sell like a bad product.”

Asked if Tambuwal was shaken by the development, the source pointed out that the Speaker was unperturbed, as he was sure of the unflinching support of the majority of the lawmakers.

Another source said: “It would be difficult for those planning Tambuwal’s ouster to get enough recruits for their plot because we are fully aware of their desperate move to edge him out and plant a stooge to undo the Nigerian people. But that will not happen because we now work as members of the same family.”

There was tension in the House, Wednesday, following SMS sent to first-time lawmakers to assemble for an ‘operation to clean up the House.’ But the move failed when an emergency session was called and the issue examined by the leadership, compelling the protagonist to beat a retreat.

It was not however clear, last night, what the next move of the protagonists would be.
